Dr. Kingsley will be presenting a pair of lectures intended to help shepherds and goat farmers reach their goals in the spring by planning for success year round. Novice and experienced farmers alike should find something new to take home and solve a problem or help something go more smoothly.
Topics will include:
Timing of reproductive and pregnancy cycles
Deciding who and when to breed
Managing pregnancy for minimal complications at birth
Preparing for lambing and kidding
When and how to intervene when problems occur
Managing lamb/kid crop for growth and health
The format will be casual with plenty of interaction and a break between lectures to meet other small ruminant producers in the area. Light refreshments will be provided. Lambing/kidding supply kits will be available for purchase.
This event will be free, although donations to support our host, Pickens Hall, are welcome. RSVP appreciated but not required.
Lambing and kidding kits contain:
1 old towel*
1 flashlight
1 digital thermometer
4 oz hand soap
5 oz sterile lubricant
16 oz 7% iodine in spray bottle
1 sleeve gauze 3x3 sponges
2 Pritchard teats
1 feeding tube with syringe
10 small exam gloves
10 large exam gloves
10 small obstetric sleeves
10 large obstetric sleeves
Laminated fast fact sheet
All packed in a sturdy plastic box to keep things clean and dry. Cost is $65. Do you have your own kit that you would like to just stock up? Let me know what you'd like and I can bring it to the talk. Not coming to the talk? These will be for sale on an on-going basis.
*It would have been simpler to buy towels for these-but new towels aren't very good at pulling moisture off new babies, and they take up too much space in your kit and washing machine. These towels have been carefully selected to get the job done!
